Trail Bosses Responsibilities

During the September meeting it was brought up that the trail bosses for each project should be submitting reports to the newsletter and the website.  Photos are also needed for the website; let’s do as good as or better than all those other chapters.  Disk photos are the best.  Rod Parks is working on updating the trail boss responsibility procedure.  If you have comments or suggestions, please give him a call.

 Blue Mountain Elk Fence Project

Two days in the last two weeks Mark Bogar took a beautiful fall ride in to the Blues to check the elk fence.  The fires have finally been controlled and the sky was truly blue.  The first ride was made with Pat Bogar, Mike Berghammer, Bruce Wyatt, and Larry Taylor.  The weather was perfect and since this project needed attention soon, we made a few phone calls to invite folks and headed on up to Peola.  We did a lot of brush cutting, sawing of little trees, and sawing of a few big trees.  Over all the fence from the Forest Service line at Iron Springs Road to the east is in pretty good condition.

Then because the weather was so good, Mark and Jim Bunch made a Monday ride from the Forest Service line at Iron Springs Road to the west. We cut some trees off the fence.  The fence from Iron Springs to Pataha Creek is in pretty good condition. From Pataha Creek to the main mountain road needs a lot of repair, as well as brushing and tree cutting. The fence is not in quite as good of shape in that direction, part of it has burned and is being replaced.

This is an ongoing project that we need to work on, so don’t feel left out as we will try to plan a head a bit more on the next ride in that direction.  We are not obligated to do all of this work this year, but we at least know the general condition of the fence and what we need to do in the future.    By Mark Bogar, Trail Boss

Christmas Party

We will be discussing the party and where we will be having it at this meeting.  If you are interested in helping in any way, please speak up at the meeting or call Bruce Wyatt.

Tucannon

Cummins Creek Trailhead Project

We will be setting a date for the Cummins Creek hitch rails and animal gate project at the October meeting.  We need one day to go down on the Tucannon to the Fish and Wildlife shop to build the above mentioned items.  The iron is down there, we should plan on taking some tools, i.e. saw horses, welder, chop saw and band saw, etc.  This needs to be completed by early November.

The reason for this project is F & W took out the horse camping area at Cummins Creek and are adding to the next campground up the road.  If we are going to get this in to a horse camping area, we need to participate with this project.  Cummins Creek can be ridden year around and is a nice place to camp.  Let’s keep it available to livestock.  Ed Bishop is the Trail Boss on this project.

Officer Nomination for Next Year

Consider running for office this year!  We always like new ideas and changes, well most of us like them.

Also we need board of directors and a new face behind the newsletter (new ideas would be good too).

Fish Lake Project Update

Planned for September 1, this project was once again postponed until further notice.  Trail Boss Paul Bogar, 743-2686.  Contact him for questions.

Right to Ride Information

I, Steve Didier, am asking the Chapters in Idaho to back away from any support for Wilderness, new or other wise, until we have a chance to determine if our National strategy for Right to Ride is working (read Sen. Craig & Dominici).  At this point in time with the Trails Classification issue and the tendency on the part of the agencies to limit and/or deny access to pack and saddle stock, particularly in Wilderness - when viewed nationally -- we do not see how BCHA can support any new Wilderness. BCH
of Washington has even gone so far as to say that they will begin to cut back and even stop volunteer efforts within Wilderness unless they see some change in the present direction and attitude on the part of the agencies, Forest Service in particular.

Thanks,
Steven J Didier

BCH Members at Work

April 1st and Sept 30th, Mark and Pat Bogar,

assembled and judged the Trail Class at the Lewis Clark Saddle Club spring and fall horseshow.  They were both successful, in that we heard good things about the obstacles and overall events.  This is a good way to promote the BCH and something that we as a chapter should be involved with.  It looks like we may be asked to build the trail class for the Asotin County Fair, time will tell.  BCH has sponsored the Trail Class awards during this last year at both the Asotin County Fair and the Nez Perce County Fair.  That, too, is a good way to promote the BCH.

Good luck to all you hunters!!  And may you all enjoy your riding in the wonderful fall weather!
