National Trails Day

By

Bill Correll, Trail Boss

The National Trails Day, June 3, work project was completed with some cooperation from Mother Nature.  Larry Taylor, Rod Parks and I arrived at the Indian Tom trailhead the Friday evening of the 2nd.  The Forest roads were a sea of mud and Larry had to change a flat tire in the midst of it!  The trailhead has some corrals so the horses were comfortable.  The spring is quite a ways down off the hill so if you camp there, take some extra water for the convenience.  In the morning Mother Nature showed her better side and shut off the rain and baths us with some sun filtered thru some clouds.  Dave Favor and Pat and Mark Bogar arrived.  Four others were signed up but by 10:10 we hit the road to Wenatchee Guard Station.  This is about 2 1/2 to 3 miles and takes that early morning zip out of your horse. The first part of trail 3137 is a little steep but soon traverses thru draws and over ridges till you come on to Wenatchee Creek. Three or four years ago the Forest Service had an excavator on this loop trail so the tread is pretty good.  Reaching the junction where the Indian Tom trail comes in we were pleasantly surprised with fresh horse tracks and soon came onto the rest of our party of Laurel and Bob Kuther, Bob Henricksen and Dan Budvarson.  We enjoyed a 2 o'clock lunch and then started up Indian Tom.  Our other party had cut this out as they came down so all we had to contend with was the rather steep grade.  All together the two crews cut out about 38 trees and rolled 2 dozen rocks off the trail.  This trail follows the creek thru some big beautiful pine and tamarack.  The day was finished off with some cool ones and a rehash of Rod's near accident.  I'm not going to try to tell you about it as Rod is much more able to ...Ask him!!

Kids Kamp

There have been several meetings to get the Kids Kamp in order.  This week there were four very dedicated and ambitious BCH members that spent an entire day working on the new location, the Smoothing Iron Ranch that is owned by Washington Wildlife Department. Bob Dice, Fish and Wildlife, is being very helpful also and we feel the facility is going to be pretty nice.  The early bird workers have the pens set up, fences repaired, the house cleaned up, the shop cleaned up and some weed eating done.  The Fish and Wildlife plan to mow early the week of kids kamp and that should make it very nice for our stay.  Oh they have the water running too. The dates are June 21-25 and at this time we have 21 youth signed up.  We are riding considerably more than previous years, but still doing learning projects while riding.  There will be a Kids Kamp meeting at 6:00 on Tuesday just prior to the regular TRBCH meeting.  Contact Pat Bogar

Corral Creek Project

The Corral Creek Project, June 17th and 18th, was picked to accommodate any members whether they ride or not.  Twin Rivers installed fencing at this camp a few years ago.  When you leave Grangeville you take the road to Mount Idaho and Elk City for about a mile.  When you get to the out door Theatre go straight ahead on Forest Service road 221.  When you come to Cold Springs Saddle turn left and stay on 221.  5 or 6 miles more you'll come to another intersection with 309 (old Adams ranger station) turn left for about 3 miles and Corral Creek trail head is on your right.  This is a paved road clear to Adam's Ranger Station turn off onto 309 Road and then it is gravel for the last 3 miles.   There may be rail fencing to repair and clean up around the camp area.  There is a Forest Service toilet available.  Bring your own potable water but the Corral Creek is handy for the stock.  We will also be working on the Mill Creek trail, tread work and brush trimming.  I'll need to know how many are going to attend as Twin Rivers will furnish the meat for Saturday's dinner.  Let's have a good turn out for our first Forest Service job.  I won't be able to attend the next two meetings so I'll have some one send the sign up sheet around and you can call me also.   Bill Correll  243-4855

Mike Karlin

He was bucked off his horse and injured seriously.  He needs all our support and prayers for a speedy recovery.  You have to ask Mike about the buck off as he is keeping it pretty close to his chest covered by the body cast.  Get well, Mike!

MEMORANDUM

To:     AHC Recreation Organizations

From:  American Horse Council

Re:     Radanovich “Right-to-Ride” Bill Passes House

Date:   May 17, 2006

Yesterday, the House of Representatives passed Congressman George Radanovich’s “Right-to-Ride” bill (H.R. 586).  The bill is intended to protect the use and access of pack and saddle stock animals on public lands, wilderness areas, national monuments, and other areas that are administered by the National Park Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, or the Forest Service where there is a historical tradition of such use.

The legislation would require that these federal agencies manage these lands to preserve and facilitate the traditional and continued use and access of horses to these areas.

During the debate on the legislation on the House floor, Congressman Radanovich (R-CA) stated:

“Perhaps no other activity is more synonymous with the exploration of our vast open lands than that of the use of pack and saddle stock.  Who could forget those images of President Teddy Roosevelt and John Muir on horseback at what was to become the Grand Canyon and Yosemite National Parks?  While some claim that this bill singles out pack and saddle use and affords it greater consideration than other forms of recreation or commercial use, I would argue that pack and saddle use has played a far greater historic role on our public lands, particularly in our western states, than simply recreation.  What may be perceived by some today as recreation was once a vital part of everyday living throughout our Nation’s history.”

The industry must now turn its attention to the Senate bill (S. 781), which has been introduced by Senator Mike Crapo (R-ID).

Trail Ride

Here is a link to the three day trail ride info., and registration form.  All breeds are welcome!  I went to this last year (I had one of two Arabians), and it was a blast.  The facility is unbelievably great, the meals were fabulous, and there is also an auction on Saturday evening.   The price includes all the meals at a full blown dining facility, beverages, four trail rides, including a poker ride, lots of prizes, a horse race game, camping for the weekend, etc.  The scenery is spectacular, lots of wildlife.  This is also a pony club facility with lots of outdoor arenas, courses to play in, etc.

The deadline is June 15th to register!!  Contact Gayle at  glwest@cableone.net  or this website
